PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS COMMITTEE
The Professional Standards Committee (PSC) provides an avenue for NetJets pilots to promote a professional work environment as well as to facilitate peer intervention based upon mutual respect, cooperation, and trust. The committee is recognized for these efforts by the Company, and as such, may accept cases from management in an attempt to resolve issues, thereby avoiding management involvement. The committee was established and is governed by Letter of Agreement (LOA) 06-002.
The committee can assist in situations dealing with CRM-style issues, personality conflicts, non-compliance with SOPs, and crew coordination issues. For example, the PSC has also been successful at resolving cases amid vendors, airlines, internal NetJets personnel, and NetJets pilots that would otherwise have been subject to management intervention. The committee also works closely with other union committees to shed light on crew coordination issues that the PSC committee does not handle directly such as scheduling, safety and training, uniform and aircraft turnover (i.e., Jepps and aircraft cleanliness).
The committee, however, does not handle cases involving FAA enforcement actions, grievance matters, and substance abuse issues while on duty.
The PSC functions on a strict policy of confidentiality, and a need to know basis. A case will not be discussed with others, including committee members unless the caller is advised that additional committee members will be informed and their assistance would be helpful in resolving the case. By the same token, the professional standards process relies upon each participant to keep their conversations and the facts of each case confidential, which allows the resolution process to proceed in accordance with an established protocol.
The case process begins when the crewmember makes contact with the committee through the Union's telephone system, (877) 652-7271, or via e-mail, psc@njasap.com. In either case, only a pilot's direct contact information should be left in these messages – not the details of the issue; please refer to the contact procedures provided below. Once the information is retrieved, a committee volunteer will contact the caller.
While working the case, the committee volunteer will remain neutral, and each person involved will have an opportunity to express their concerns. In most cases, the resolution will involve a conference call during which time both sides will have an opportunity to communicate. As a result, the committee’s work could not be accurately described as anonymous.
In the event the case is not resolved, the committee will not share details with any other party. If a case was referred to the PSC by management, only its status, whether resolved or unresolved, will be reported back to the Company; details will remain confidential.
History has shown the PSC’s volunteers have a proven track record of mitigating crewmember conflicts, effectively avoiding management intervention. And as the committee embarks on its next chapter, its volunteers and leaders are genuinely dedicated to making NetJets a career destination and an enjoyable place to work. Such an effort is made possible by everyone – the pilots especially – who adhere to professional standards and, when necessary, modify or cease engaging in a specific behavior based upon the recommendation of their peers.
